calling. he is a car satisfies man! pretty good. 5:00 on this thanksgiving morning. breakfast and a thanksgiving feels. >> it's a holiday tradition at one san francisco location. cbs reporter cate caugiran is at glide memorial church with a look at all the preparations. good morning, cate. >> good morning, frank and michelle. happy thanksgiving to you guys. this is an event that's truly powered by the community. i want to show you the donations. look at the happens and turkeyses. it's the community generosity of volunteers and donations that keeps this alive. now, they have been doing this event for almost 30 years. you can see the preparations have already started the event bringing about 600 volunteers all helping to feed our homeless. today they will be serving all the thanksgiving fixings. about 300 turkeys, 200 happens, dressing, gravy, dessert. our cbs 5's ken bastida got a chance to chat with a guy who makes this happen every year, cecil williams, who talked about the true sense of ram radry camaraderie.

>> people talk with each other, converse with each other, get to know each other. >> reporter: now, the meals will actually start being served with thanksgiving breakfast at 7:00 and dinners will be served throughout the day starting at 9:00. they feed the homeless throughout the year. if you want to donate, stop by. volunteers will be here in an hour to get the meals going. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> i don't know about this. but some people they like a little exercise before the big meal. >> no, i just want to eat. >> tens of thousands are expected to hit the streets of san jose for the silicon valley turkey trot that kicks off at 6:30 a.m. of the this is the 8th year for the family event.

since it began the turkey trot has raised more than $2 million for local charities in the south bay. 25,000 people are expected to participate this year and that's the deal. get up early, run and you can justify the meal. >> i like to get up early and eat! >> eating the operative word. live pictures from the big apple. there's hello kitty in the streets there. and somewhere behind hello kitty there's spider-man and dozens of other famous characters. they are ready to roll in the macy's thanksgiving day parade of course in new york city. there are special seats for those hit hard by superstorm sandy. you can watch the parade right here on cbs 5. that's all starting at 1:00 this afternoon. i love watching this parade. >> i do, too. it is fun. it starts later. being on the east coast all those years, you are used to getting up at 9:00 and boom there it is. you have to wait a little

longer here. looks like a nice day. >> you can see the crowds are already lining up on the streets there. black friday is starting a whole day earlier this year. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington live outside a kmart store in san mateo this morning. kmart opens in an hour. >> reporter: there is a line already wrapped around the building. some people got here at 10 p.m. last night. the kmart opens at 6 a.m. and is among a handful of stores opening on thursday for black friday sales. a lot of people are bundled up because it's chilly. you have your blanket. what are you out here for? >> for the door busters, the televisions that are $97 and 1.99. i think that's the majority of people out here for the tvs. >> reporter: what do you think about behalf hang on thanksgiving this year at a lot -- happening on thanksgiving this year at a lot of places? >> i think it's a positive thing because, you know, that way if we're out here now we

still have dinnertime with the family. a lot of people are cooking. it has its good and bad. for us it's good. >> reporter: it's 48 degrees. it feels colder. >> it feels like it's below zero. the hypothermia is kicking in! [ laughter ] >> reporter: all right. thank you so much and happy thanksgiving. so again, the kmart here opens at 6:00. closes at 4:00 so they can get ready for even more deals that happen at 8:00. tomorrow there will be a lot of black friday deals all over the bay area. in san mateo, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> i hope those shoppers get turkey today. a lot of stores not opening until tonight or tomorrow. they already have lines of people outside their stores. they are that eager for those post-thanksgiving sales and this is a look at the people camping outside of best buy in pleasant hill. some have been there for days. this scene is playing out in

stores in the bay area and beyond. we have seen them camping out for days. this is a look at retail stores opening up tonight. sears, toys 'r us and walmart open at 8 p.m., target an hour later. locally, two malls will open at midnight thanksgiving night for the first time. they are valley fair in san jose and santa clara, and stoneridge shopping center in pleasanton. so we want to know, what's your favorite thanksgiving day tradition? comment on facebook or twitter, or email us at mornings@cbs5.com. >> if you have a favorite side dish or something you do at the table or whatever. this morning gaza is claiming victory hours after a cease-fire was reached to end the worse cross-border fighting in four years between the two. the truce calls for the palestinian group hamas to stop firing rockets at israel. israel says it will end air strikes on the gaza strip and has pulled back its troops from the border. egypt's new islamic government

played a key role in the negotiations with diplomatic help for the united states secretary of state hillary clinton. >> now we have to focus on reaching a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advances the security, dignity and legitimate aspirations of palestinians and israelis alike. >> israeli and gaza leaders still have to negotiate a deal though. that would open borders of the blockaded palestinian territory. five israelis and over 160 palestinians were killed during the eight days of attacks. u.n. ambassador susan rice now defending herself in the aftermath of the benghazi attacks. senator john mccain has criticized her for participating in what he describes as a over cover-up. >> this president has and

administration have been guilty of cover-up or incompetence. the focus is on rice because she is believed to be the president's first choice to replace secretary of state hillary clinton. some republican senators have vowed to block her nomination. she spoke publicly about the controversy yesterday. >> when discussing the attacks against our facilities in benghazi, i relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. i made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers. everyone, particularly the intelligence community, has worked in good faith to provide the best assessment based on the information available. >> she also says some of the statements that senator mccain said about her are unfounded. they call him karnow, lawrence karnow. and he is at a very special

place today. >> yes, he is. he is at the auto show in san francisco. last time you got out of the car, you look like an old man. [ laughter ] >> reporter: i'm feeling like an old man this morning! this is a different kind of car here. this is a smart car and, you know, if you are ever having trouble parking in san francisco or anywhere, this is the car -- it's very tiny economical, it almost feels like you're sitting in the back seat but i'm over 6 feet and i can actually sit in this one. i don't know if i would feel safe on the freeway but it's neat to look at and nice to drive around town if you can. let's talk weather outside. we have big changes coming in our direction as high pressure beginning to sneak in overhead. we have some mostly clear skies although some patchy fog showing up in some of the valleys. temperatures are a little chilly. 30s and 40s inland 50s at the coast. high pressure should make for a sunny afternoon on this thanksgiving, good day to

enjoy. lots of sunshine and some beautiful weather. it looks like it's going to hol into the afternoon. gianna, i think you would like great in this car >> cute. >> great colors. >> giants colors. i found a snag out there. if you are planning to head towards 680 northbound at jacklin road, there is some flooding from a sprinkler. elsewhere heading towards the maze so far, so good no delays to report. so far, so good at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are off very quiet. and san mateo bridge very light looking good both directions between 101 and 880. back to you guys. >> smart car, mercedes? >> mercedes! >> good girl. me, too. keep shopping, lawrence 5:10. people living in the oakland hills say they are battling an increase in crime that the

police just can't handle. so they are taking the offensive now against the crooks targeting their neighborhoods. cbs 5 reporter christin ayers explains they are going high- tech to do it. >> reporter: from the warning signs in this oakland hills neighborhood to the security cameras on porches the message to would-be burglars is clear, you are being watched. but the cameras you see are just the tip of the iceberg. there are many more that you don't see. now neighbors are taking their surveillance game to the next level. they have created a cooperative and have hidden cameras throughout the neighborhood. they are already catching criminals in the act. an expert in computer surveillance came up with the plan for the co-op after a woman was raped in her own home in his oakland hills neighborhood. the idea? >> never again would we allow a criminal to enter or leave our neighborhood undetected. >> reporter: 88 of his neighbors bought into the co-op for a few hundred dollars apiece. high-tech infrared hidden cameras posted at the entrance

and exit of the neighborhood. before long, the cameras had captured a hit-and-run and this. a man prowling the neighborhood at 2 a.m. right around the time that cars were broken into. the co-op handed the man's license plate number over to the police. >> right now, we're capturing more than 98% of all the cars that go by. >> reporter: the hidden cameras are so stealth that my photographer and i never realized our pictures were being recorded while we were conducting our interview today. the images go to a cloud database accessible by a few neighbors. only if a crime occurs. he said despite some privacy concerns, the technology is growing on his neighbors. more than 10,000 are now interested in joining the co- op. >> i think that this is not going to solve all or problems. i do think that this will make us more safe not just our neighborhood but all of oakland. >> reporter: in oakland, christin ayers, cbs 5. it is 5:12 now. the next best thing on thanksgiving day? the football games of course. >> yes. still to come a special game

let's get a look at weatherd traffic. nothing like the chatter at the dinner table on thanksgiving. >> what's your tradition? >> i have been away for so long i have own been if the bay area twice since 1984 because in televisions you're in ratings in november so i was back east over those years. >> so you get to spend time with your family this year. >> all that family stuff. >> that's good. sounds like fun. all right. lawrence is having a little fun, too. >> i guess so. you went from a mercedes to a smart car. what are you buying now, big guy? >> i am buying a classic car.

this is a place to be, folk forget the football. come down to the auto show! they have hundreds of cars to see. thank you for being here today, kevin diamond. >> thank you for coming down. >> tell us about the car show. what can people expect to see when they come down here? >> basically, the feature is 2013 model vehicles from 39 major manufacturers. but we tried to spice up the show with a lot of special displays, classic cars, 30 of them here from the academy of art university, race cars, tuner cars, all custom cars, hotrods, you know, fuel- efficient cars. just about anything people would want to see. we like to say that there's something for everybody here. >> reporter: now, i had no idea but this apparently is a very, very popular event. even on thanksgiving you are expected thousands of people. >> absolutely. it's basically a san francisco tradition. there are people who literally plan their thanksgiving around, you know, coming down to the car show with all the relatives in town. friday is of course our biggest day. saturday our second biggest day. we are opening today, you

know, at 10 a.m. we'll run through monday the 26th. it's only $9 for adults and children 12 and younger are free with an adult. >> reporter: how much sleep are you going to be getting in the next few days? >> i'm going to get about five hours in the next 48 hours. >> reporter: welcome to working on the morning show! thank you for joining us. we have lots of neat cars for you to see if you want to check it out. it's a great time at the moscone center here in san francisco. the weather is going to be perfect even if it was outdoors it would be a great day to do it lots of sunshine, chilly temperatures early on in the 30s and 40s especially in the valleys and some patchy valley fog as well so watch out for that if you are traveling early on. by the afternoon, plenty of sunshine. and those temperatures warming up nicely into the 60s. it looks like high pressure building in not only today but for the foreseeable future right on in inn through the holiday weekend as that will ridge will sit over head bringing plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures. in fact, the next couple of days we could see those temperatures popping up into

as the holiday that wages war against the waistline but today, some peace. dr. kim shows us why a lot of the food is good for us. reporter: at whole foods they came in droves. >> i would say that is one of the busiest if not the busiest day that we have in the year. >> reporter: on everyone's list, a favorite. >> probably the dressing. >> i personally like the turkey. >> i say the pumpkin pie. >> i like everything. >> reporter: thanksgiving's actually packed with nutrition. take turkey. turkey is a good source of lean protein, a complete protein that provides all 18 essential amino acids. cranberries are packed with anti-oxidants. in stuffing, lots of fiber-rich foods including onions which contain antiobjection continues, vitamin c and chromeup . rice contains manganese, magnesium, synch and copper. mush embassy rooms copper, potassium, iron and vitamin c

no official comment from anyone on the 49ers team. football at cbs 5 starts at 9 a.m. this morning, pre-game. we have the lions and texans at 9:30. play of the day on thanksgiving day, we have a little hoop action for you. we go to houston ex-warrior nate robinson with the ball with an impressive reverse 360 and the layup, spinarama, up with the right hand, up and in. rockets won the game but nate is our play of the day. u.s. troops in afghanistan celebrated thanksgiving day in a very american way. soldiers stationed in kabul took in a game of football themselves. check out the jerseys they're sporting there. they were donated by the new york jets. they are playing the pats today. after the game the troops enjoyed a traditional thanksgiving dinner. nice. it's 5726 right now. progress in the middle east but will a cease-fire hold? the latest on the fragile efforts for peace. >> and getting an early start on black friday in a big way. the thanksgiving shopping rush is already under way just who

people expected to come out. how will your weather be? we'll talk about that coming up. >> and if you are traveling on this thanksgiving, i will have a look at your travel times in just a few minutes. good morning, everyone. it's thursday, november 22. happy thanksgiving to everyone out there. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30 now on the holiday. hundreds of people serving up thousands of meals. >> they are up early this morning to make sure people in san francisco have a delicious thanksgiving. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at glide memorial with a holiday tradition. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving to you, and take a look at this. the preparations have already begun. you can see all of these turkeys are going to be turned into one big thanksgiving feast. actually they are going to serve about 5,000 dinners for the needy here in san francisco. cbs 5's ken bastida was here last night to get a look at the meal preparations, volunteers and organizers back again at 6 a.m. to prep and serve again like i said thousands of meals to the

needy here in san francisco. we spoke with cecil williams hotels us what's on today's menu. >> we're going to cook 300 turkeys, 200 hams, dressings with gravy, and then we'll also have vegetables and, of course, dessert. >> reporter: that sounds delicious. glide memorial has been serving meals to the homeless for the past 30 years and really is an event that's powered by the generosity of the community. about 600 people will give their time today not counting several who have donated food and money. they can use more help and welcome donations all year long. to give you a line-up of how it'sing go to happen today, breakfast is at 7:00 this morning followed by thanksgiving meals or dinners throughout the day starting at 9:00. and again you can see they are already starting to get to

work. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. gaza residents are calling it a fresh start. a cease-fire appears to be holding this morning putting an end to eight days of deadly attacks between israel and those hamas militants. there have been celebrations in the streets of gaza where air strikes have killed more than 160 people in the past eight days. those attacks are now over at least for now. but as susan mcginnis reports, a lot more work needs to be done if this truce is going to last. reporter: shops are re- opening and clean-up is under way in gaza. the city suffered massive damage during a bloody eight- day rocket war between israel and hamas. under the cease-fire agreement, hamas promises to stop firing rockets. israel says it will end air strikes and will ease border restrictions that have stifled gaza's economy for years. israeli troops that had been poised for a possible ground war pulled back this morning. in tel aviv, most israelis were also happy to hear the news. >> i would like to believe that

not fighting will always do more good than fighting. but i'm very happy to hear that. >> reporter: egypt's new islamist government was the driving force behind the negotiations to end the conflict with diplomatic help from secretary of state hillary clinton. clinton spent two days shuttling between jerusalem, the west bank and cairo. >> people of this region deserve the chance to live free from fear and violence and today's agreement is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: clinton expects egypt to play a key role in maintaining peace. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. police are investigating a gun battle this shut down lanes of i-580 in oakland for hours. two cars were found riddled with bullets near the seminary exit last night. there was no one in either car and police haven't found anyone who may have been hurt. the freeway was closed for two

hours for the police investigation. meantime, a homicide not far from that shooting. officers were called to hilton street near seminary avenue at 9:30 last night. that's where they found a male victim who had been shot once. he was pronounced dead at the scene. there is no suspect information. in other bay area headlines, the richmond city council is keeping a close eye on the richmond refinery. they want chevron to start over if the work isn't done properly the first time. a stretch of san francisco's ocean beach is closed this morning. an overflow of rainwater and sewage prompted crews to block off a quarter mile of the northern most section of the beach and issue a no swimming alert. they will run tests to see how badly the beach was contaminated. >> there is something to do in san francisco today. it's cool. check out the 55th annual san

francisco auto show. where's your car, lawrence? >> reporter: yeah, you know, it's hard to pick, i have so many out here. literally hundreds of cars. we have nissan, dodge, fiat, ford, volkswagen, subaru, you name it we have tons of cars but how about this one? this is the kind of car that i need to get to work. the sponsor geico. i could get to work in a hurry with this guy. the you're going to see a lot of really unique neat cars if you want to come out to the auto show in san francisco at the moscone center. it's going to be open at so a.m. until 10:00 tonight. a great time to get out here and maybe walk off some of those calories before you have that big turkey dinner. let's talk weather. around the bay area area some changes outside. remember yesterday it was very, very wet outside. temperatures though chilly under mostly clear skies. we have patchy fog developing in the valleys. down into the 30s in the napa valley right now. through the day high pressure building in overhead we are going to see a lot of sunshine coming our way and some very comfortable temperatures mainly

into the 60s outside. so some beautiful weather to come. not only today but over the next couple of days. but oh, gianna, how about this? riding this little baby to work, wouldn't that be nice? >> would you get here very fast, lawrence. >> oh, yeah. >> especially at 4 a.m. you can see not a bad drive. in fact, the only slowing we are seeing is on that southbound side of 280 as you work your way through san bruno. there are a few shopping malls in that area. doesn't look like they are open but maybe people are headed out to line up for black friday. 101 looking good towards sfo. so far, so good 19 minutes from 92 to the 80 split so no delays towards the airport this morning. also headed towards the oakland airport traffic good along 880. northbound clear 238 to the maze traffic only 15 minutes. south bay checking in problem- free, as well. no delays along 101, 280 and guadalupe parkway checking in problem-free. changes to mass transit details on that in just a few minutes. in just a half hour, if you

can believe it, kmart opens. it's not even black friday yet. >> they have some great deals there. they are offering up huge discounts and cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington live at the san mateo kmart where several people have been waiting overnight for some monster deals. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. a lot of people in line. and usually black friday happens on friday, right? not this year. kmart opens at 6 a.m. today until 4 p.m. and then 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. they are among a handful of businesses opening a day early to get people in the door and get some door buster deals one day early. some people have been out here since 10:00 last night so they are going on 8 hours now. and some of those hot ticket items, electronics. there's a 42" plasma tv for 199.99. that's down from about $450. also nintendo dsi for 79.99. some dvd players for $10 and some digital cameras for $50. now, sir, i see you're waiting in line but you're also looking

at some papers that talk about the deals. i mean, what time you go get out here? >> about 1:30 this morning. >> reporter: i understand you had though take a truck to get here? >> yes. i came down from san francisco on a samtrans bus. >> reporter: what are new line for? >> they are selling a 32" lcd hdtv for $97. >> reporter: all right. sounds like a good deal. >> in my budget it's a great deal! >> reporter: what do you think about some of these stores now doing black friday on thursday which is supposed to be thanksgiving? do you think it's kind of rooting the tradition a little bit or do you think it's a good idea? >> i have never participated in a black friday sale before. i usually avoid lines like this. i actually feel kind of bad about supporting the behavior. but my budget like i say for the price, this is a good deal for me. but i do you know -- i feel a lot of sympathy for the people who have to work on their thanksgiving day. but i thank them for being here. >> reporter: all right. thank you so much and happy thanksgiving to you. so let's take one more look at

she crashed her car on highway 4 and then he disappeared. cbs 5 reporter juliette goodrich on the two clues that could identify him. >> i'm thankful to be alive. >> reporter: thankful because teresa brill nearly died when her car flipped twice over a guardrail into oncoming traffic along busy highway 4. a good samaritan came to her rescue. she recalls he was wearing military fatigues and knew how to respond in emergencies. >> he turned to the front me of and talked to me and did a quick physical exam to make sure i could feel, make sure my hips weren't broken, made sure my spine was intact and he just talked to me and kept me calm when i felt like i was going to pass out when i was hyperventilating and really just not sure what was going on. >> reporter: she remembers he had bright green eyes. she says she remembers that detail because he told her to look into his eyes and keep talking and stay calm until

paramedics arrived. when she got into the ambulance, he was right by her side. but she said then he just disappeared before she could say thank you. >> i mean, he was the person i needed when i felt like my whole world had disappeared.
